Our Vision:

The Arc Baltimore’s Assistive Technology Program is dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by increasing awareness, access, and support for assistive technology (AT). We help people acquire and utilize AT tools tailored to their needs, promoting greater independence and community inclusion.

What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

Assistive technology refers to any item, equipment, or system—whether commercially purchased, modified, or custom-made—that helps increase, maintain, or improve a person’s functional capabilities. AT also supports greater participation and inclusion in the community.

People often consider AT to gain independence in areas such as:

Communication: Speech-generating devices
Computer Access: Speech-to-text software, large print keyboards
Eating: Adaptive utensils, suction base plates
Environmental Control: Switches for lights, appliances
Hearing: Assistive listening devices, bed-shaking alarm clocks, flashing doorbells
Home Safety: Stove shutoff devices, bed-shaking smoke detectors
Memory & Cognition: Task prompting apps, reminder systems
Phone Use: Picture phones, large-button phones
Recreation: Talking book players, large-button media remotes
Vision: Magnifiers, talking watches
